Athens makes a strong comeback in the WTA Tour by Mercedes-Benz

Saint Petersburg, Florida USA-  It is announced by WTA that for the first time after more than 35 years, Athens returns in the WTA Tour organization, driven by Mercedes-Benz.

WTA 250 Athens Open will be held the week of July 13th 2026 at Stadion Sports Center, located withing the iconic Olympic Tennis Stadium, instead of the Jiangxi Open in China. The matches will take place on hard surface courts, with a Draw of 32 athletes in single matches and 16 doubles games.

Maria Sakkari, the premier Greek tennis player of all times who has reached the 3rd place in world ranking and has herself competed in ten WTA finals, stated:

“Competing in my home country and listening to Greek tennis fans cheering and supporting me will be, for sure, one of the most unique moments of my career. The first time I even held a racquet and dreamt of becoming a professional player was in Athens. The fact that a WTA tournament returns here, makes it even more special.”

The organization marks the return of a WTA tournament in town for the first time since 1990, when the Athens Trophy competition was last organized. Worth mentioning is that Maria Sakkari’s mother, Aggeliki Kanelopoulou, competed in the 1986 WTA finals, the very first establishment of the championship.

By the WTA 250 Athens Open tournament, Greece is numbered among this year’s 27 countries and regions hosting a WTA Tour organization, establishing the women’s tennis momentum world-wide as well as its significant international growth.
